Bold footwork and hybrid bass debut by Samotek.
The Moscow-based bedroom producer combines minimal footwork beats with melancholy post vaporwave synths on his debut EP for Defrostatica.
For this EP, Samotek's approach was to position sounds expansively within the stereo field and allow his drums to pierce the mood. He effortlessly lays out melancholic themes and build-ups, only to give them space amidst a sparsely accented kick drum pulse. This is evident in 'Smth More', which is perfectly deconstructed. The title track, 'Side Quest', is a different beast, opening with a countdown that turns into a wild kick versus bassline pattern accompanied by an echoing synth motif. 'Even Love' is a mesmerising footwork tune with percussion work that will stick with you. Samotek ends the EP on a blue note with the beautiful footwork track 'Lydia'.
